Habs beat Rangers in New York
The Montreal Canadiens won again on the road Monday night.
The Habs (8-3-1) remain unbeaten away from the Bell Centre after defeating the New York Rangers 4-1 at Madison Square Garden.
Steve Begin's goal in the third period broke a 1-1 tie and gave Montreal the lead for good. Begin's goal came only 1:14 after the Rangers' Jaromir Jagr tied the game for New York.
"I thought tonight was a solid, patient game and patience paid off," said Canadiens coach Claude Julien.
"We got better, and in the third period we took advantage of our opportunities."
After two scoreless periods, the goals came quickly in the third. Montreal centre Saku Koivu gave the Canadiens a 1-0 lead with a power-play goal just 47 seconds into the final period.
However, Jagr answered back at 9:40.
The Rangers (6-4-3) looked poised to take the lead on another power play but Begin then scored on Rangers goalie Henrik Lundqvist to give the Canadiens a 2-1 lead.
Jagr tied the score when he rifled a slapshot and scored.
Former Ranger Alexei Kovalev gave the Canadiens a 3-1 lead. Sundstrom then sealed the game for Montreal with an empty-net goal with just 36.4 seconds remaining.
Canadiens goaltender Jose Theodore also rebounded from a bad game.
Theodore was pulled Saturday night in the first period after giving up three Ranger goals on only 13 shots.
"The last game, as a team, myself, I didn't think we played the way we should," Theodore said.
"I was unhappy with the way I played so today was a big challenge for us to play well and for me to bounce back."
Theodore made 23 saves while Lundqvist stopped 27 Montreal shots.
Montreal has earned 11 of a possible 12 points on the road.
